Our social democratic bodies was premiered at Zodiak centre for new dance, Helsinki in April 2011. The piece was made close to the the Finnish parliamentary elections, to ask how one of the basis of the Finnish society’s welfare, social democracy, could be approached choreographically and in a performative manner. The piece is funnily sad or sadly funny in it’s tone.
Our social democratic bodies is the first part in Maija Hirvanen’s performance series Operation We. The trilogy looks at the differences and similarities of people who believe in democracy. Each of the choreographic parts approach the subject area from a different point of view.
The piece asks, what is ‘we’ in the current times? Who we? The different work names of the episodes of the piece include ‘Dancing the War Away’, ‘My first Marimekko’, ‘right to care’, ‘More coffee?’ and ‘The most beautiful hymns’.
