The piece was made close to the the Finnish parliamentary elections, to ask how one of the basis of the Finnish society&#8217;s welfare, social democracy, could be approached choreographically and in a performative manner. On Ice is a portrait of a contemporary woman in a social democratic society. With humour, the performer of the work skates on the glassy surface of the search for identity, between attributions to and/or demands on femininity and humanity, as a cheerleader gone rogue. For Hirvanen, “On Ice” works like a comic strip that is made up of episodes and associative images.]]></description>

Maija Hirvanen re-made a piece On Ice that was originally made for stage at ANTI festival 2010, Kuopio. The project returned to its site-based origins: initial versions of the piece were developed in situ at HIFK, the Helsinki Ice Hockey team’s stadium, where Maija worked with the team’s cheerleaders.
